Intuitive Eating is a non-diet approach to health and wellness that helps you tune into your body signals, break the cycle of chronic dieting and heal your relationship with food. Interventions are behavior focused instead of restrictive or rule focused. We are born intuitive eaters with the ability to balance our food intake naturally. Over time, we can lose our inner intuitive eater. The Intuitive Eating program helps you reawaken the intuitive eater inside.
A lot of people ask, if Intuitive Eating is mindful eating. There is some overlap, but Intuitive Eating covers a broader range of behaviors and mindset. Hunger, fullness, and awareness are part of Intuitive Eating, but Intuitive Eating goes deeper by addressing the emotions around food, learning to reject the diet mentality, and changing your relationship with food as well as looking at body image and physical activity. With Intuitive Eating you will learn to:
Tune into your body’s cues for hunger and fullness.
Eat based on physical reasons rather than emotional reasons.
Enjoy your food with unconditional permission to eat (with attunement).
Honor your health through “gentle nutrition.”
Intuitive Eating is not another diet! Dieting is likely what is causing your problems with food. Additionally, 95% of people that go on a diet will regain all the weight they lost. In fact, dieting has been a consistent predictor of weight gain. So if you want to gain weight, go on a diet! In the past, you may have blamed yourself, but it’s actually the process of dieting that doesn’t work. Dieting works against the way your mind and body naturally works. Intuitive Eating works WITH your mind and body to set you up for success. There are over 90 studies validating the benefits of Intuitive Eating. Most of my clients come to me with the desire to lose weight. We can definitely talk about your weight concerns, but it won’t be the main focus of the program. Focusing too much on weight can actually undermine the process of becoming an intuitive eater, so we will put your weight loss goals on the back burner while we focus on your health and habits.
Because everyone’s genetic make-up and metabolism is different, people are healthy at a variety of sizes. Intuitive Eating helps your body settle into a natural weight that’s right for you. If you have been eating for emotional reasons or not paying attention to your natural signals, then it’s likely your body is not at its natural weight and will settle into it over time as you start to eat more intuitively.
Yes. I have extensive clinical experience working with chronic conditions including but not limited to diabetes, COPD, CHF, heart disease, and hypertension. We will apply the principles of Intuitive Eating while keeping in mind any dietary needs you have with your condition.
Yes, in fact children and teenagers tend to learn the principles of Intuitive Eating faster than adults. If you have concerns about your child or teenager’s eating habits, now is the best time to get them on track with healthier habits and a healthy relationship with food. Dieting has been shown to increase disordered eating in teenagers, while Intuitive Eating has been shown to improve health.

While there is a cost associated with appointments, Intuitive Eating will likely save you money in the future. With Intuitive Eating you will finally be able to make peace with food, end food worry, and stop spending money on all those other programs that haven’t worked for you. Appointments last 45-60 minutes. The initial consult is $75 and follow-up consults are $65. If finances are an issue, I do save a couple spots a month for those in financial need. Behavior change takes time. When you’ve been hearing diet messages for years, it can take a lot support and commitment to become an intuitive eater and reap the benefits. With that said, the amount of appointments needed can vary greatly between individuals. Some individuals only need a few appointments to reap the benefits while others may need to meet for several months. Once we do your free “get to know you” call, I may be able to give you a better idea of how long you can expect the process to take.
